I looked at one ms. that had rather amateurish illumination combined with exquisite calligraphy, but the most interesting thing was the imperfections. Check out Medeltidshandskrift 16, folio 70v, at http://laurentius.lub.lu.se/volumes/Mh_16/8.html. At first I thought the page had been ripped, but then I realized that the calligraphy follows the irregular left-hand edge of the sheet. How thrifty, to use an imperfect sheet.
