RE: [scribes]: Speaking of non-paper scrolls... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 18 Aug 2002 19:51:58 +1000 From: Christine Robertson Subject: [scribes]: Look what I got for my 50th b'day (and turn green :-) Greetings, fellow scribes. Well, I just achieved my half-century, and had a good day and a great party on the weekend. Even if I did put my back out 2 days before the party -- as I said to my doctor, I *knew* it was all downhill after 50, I just didn't expect it to start so SOON! But it's OK again now, so no worries. (Muscle spasm -- hideously painful, to the point of throwing up -- but no permanent damage.) And my dearest friend Mistress Rowan Perigrynne and her partner Nicco made me a scribe's writing slope for my birthday. Rowan designed, Nicco built, and I specified dimensions and angles. Oh, but it is to *die* for. Everything I could have wished. So here are the refs to the pictures on my website so you can all see what a lovely thing it is and turn green with envy. Dimensions are 50cm wide x 40cm high (1'8" x 1' 3 3/4"), and 40cm across the bottom, whcih gives a slope of 60 degrees (about what Simon Bening used, as far as I can estimate). Anyway, it's steep. Of course, I can vary that, as the front opens up (shelves inside), and it could be propped up. And it's *solid*, so it won't shift on my bench. Anyway, go admire! - --Yseult de Lacy, OL, Lochac Front view: http://goldgryph.virtualave.net/slope_front.JPG Back view, with my device within a laurel wreath: http://goldgryph.virtualave.net/slope_back.JPG End view, to show the beautiful carved trefoil-holes: http://goldgryph.virtualave.net/slope_end-view.JPG Open, to show the nifty little shelves: http://goldgryph.virtualave.net/slope_open.JPG And finally, with the scroll I've just finished sitting on it (though I'd finished the scroll before I got the desk). If anyone is able to teach the first week of Pennsic next year it would be a fabulous thing. I taught three classes this year the first week and they were overflowing with people. These classes were not scribal arts. People there the first week are hungry for classes. Our friends from the Kingdom of Lochac had a wonderful time taking classes and they have new information to take back home. We had such a wonderful time learning together. I have been involved with the SCA now for a few months, due mostly to my daughter's participation in rapier practice. After spending a mind boggling week at Pennsic, and attending several classes, including scribal arts, I am very interested in learning and participating in this exciting art field. I've been looking over the Atlantian scribal gallery and found wonderful work there. My local scribal group seems to be very supportive.... I've met them through one of the newcomer meetings (which is what got me interested in scribal art in the first place). Unfortunately, their regularly scheduled meetings are both far away and they conflict with activities to which I take my daughter. So, my chance to work with them will be somewhat reduced. I was thinking that the best way to get started with this would be to make a small scroll for someone local to my SCA community. I would appreciate any suggestions you might have to offer me in this area. Looking forward to participating in this mailing list community. I used to live in Ponte Alto and miss it very much. I, too, started scribing there and found it a very supportive environment. I also know a lot of the fencers and a nicer bunch of people you will never meet! I know that Atlantia has a ton of backlogs. One easy way to get going might be to ask around for someone that has perhaps a baronial-level award and hasn't received a scroll for it. I never had any problems getting scroll assignments........ usually had problems turning them down! =) You could, ie, ask around the fencers, people you know, and see if anyone has a small award or knows someone like that who would like a scroll. Chances are very good they will. I think the kingdom signet there is still Genevieve? So then what you do is contact her and tell her you have taken on this assignment, etc, with as many details as possible, ie, names, dates, royalty. Then you let her know when you're done and the recipient has received the scroll. Sometimes with backlogs it can be hard finding the royals to sign but probably with a baronial award you would just need the baron and baroness, and that will probably be easier because they change less. If you see Belpheobe, tell her Hello and that I have not forgotten her AOA, it is in the works..................... sigh. Last month, I mentioned that I was thinking of = trying to paint=20 awards on ceramic plates. Several people suggested that I check out = Mary's=20 Maiolica Pages http://www.marysmaiolicaarts.c= om/=20 for ideas. So I did.

I got so involved in the ideas and history of = Maiolica by=20 following the links she gave that I went right out and tried it. Two = weeks=20 later I took first place in two categories at Aten Kingdom arts and = science=20 with my Maiolica. I even did an award on a plate. Aside from the standard "take an element of Norse art and do the text in runes, and damn the authenticity factor' method...which is pleasing to many, by the way, and can suit many a purpose... There was some discussion at our Investiture event this weekend about how groovy it would be for a Viking reign (which is nearly *all* of ours here in Avacal) to hand out awards carved as rune staves. I figure, if the stick was big enough in diameter, and the recipient didn't go play Hurley with it after court, one of the ends could be flattened enough and wide enough to hold the seal reasonably well (or figure out some way to carve the seal into the stick), and it would be far more authentic than a scroll or charter. I may yet try that. Also, one of our Beloved Dukes of An Tir (His Grace Dak, IIRC) received either his Ducal or his Chivalry scroll carved into stone (which took, so it is rumoured, four of our largest knights to haul the thing into court - and our large knights are pretty burly). And a friend recently submitted a sponsorship request on plaster of Paris 'stone' with carved text and picture stone artwork, which was well received. So, some interesting options... I'd LOVE to hear others, since we can't swing a dead cat for hitting a Viking around here....
