So I'm asking here. Someone I know is studying the St. Matthew page in Kells, and she asserts that gold leaf is being used. I can't check any of my good sources until I get home tonight, can anyone verify this for me? I didn't think leaf was used in that manuscript or many of that era and place, but as Foghorn Leghorn intones "Ah could....ah say, Ah _could_ be wrong..." :-) Thanks! Dear Sara and Lani -- Greetings, welcome to the fold. :) There ARE East Kingdom scribes on this list Sara... I'm one of them. Unfortunately, Caer Adamant is waaaaaay south of where I am, which is on the northern end of Southern Region (!), in An Dubhaigheainn (Long Island, in commonspeak). This weekend I'm planning on attending the Teahouse of the White Crane event, barring illness, injury, tornado, act of God, etc.... I'm hoping to attend Mudthaw too, which may be closer to you, down in Settmour Swamp (southern NJ) on March 10th. As far as group meetings for scribes goes.... I'm not sure of whether or not there are any near you; it may be a wise idea to contact your local head of Arts & Sciences. If you can't reach her, just drop a letter to the Tyger Signet, Duchess Stanhope, who could give you more information than I could ever hope to (including the book on EK guidelines for scribing). Her e-mail is in the Pikestaff, on the inside of the front cover. Speaking of scribal groups... I spoke to "Cricket" out here about whether or not there were scribal meetings for this barony (An Dubh), as I know there used to be workshops in neighboring Ostgardr, but closer to New York City. It so happens that the only thing she has going as far as meetings for us artsy-fartsy types is an A&S meeting... but she's more than willing to see a scribal group/guild formed. That said, I'll be attending a baronial meeting tonight (first time attending one, in the entire 2 1/2 yrs in the SCA) to make my request of the Baron and Baroness. Up until I joined this list, I had no idea that there were such things as scribal meetings. It turns out they're fairly common in other locations.... Both of you (Lani and Sara) may wish to locate a baronial officer, and if there isn't a meeting in your area, look into organizing one. While I am not a laurel in the scribal Arts, I do have a background in art from college, and am looking to hold these meetings in a public location such as one of my former colleges' studios. At least that way, it's easier to locate, and might not scare off newbies as would (likely) the thought of going to a stranger's home to discuss scribal stuff and work together. There's a number of scribes in this area -- some of them are laurels, some are not -- but having a place to gather would definitely be cool. *crossing her fingers, hoping tonight's meeting goes well* Good luck to both of you, too. :) - --Kayleigh McWhyte, Mercenary Scribe (East) E.Frank, Long Island NY =================================================================== To unsubscribe from this list, send email to with a blank Subject: line and unsubscribe scribes in the body of the message. Lani & Sarah (and any other new scribe): Thank you for the praise of my site. Take heart, you CAN learn to do many of the illumination and calligraphy without direct instruction... but, it is easier when you have the face-to-face contact. When I first started out, I had little or no personal instruction in Drachenwald (they were just starting to go to hand-made scrolls from Xeroxed copies colored in with felt markers ), and did quite well to start with. I'm at work at the moment and don't have the book citations with me, but I think I put them on my web site, so look for them there. There are a couple places you might be able to go to for this face-to-face instruction, and that is to Pennsic http://www.pennsicwar.org/penn30/ which is held the first two weeks of August in western Pennsylvania (about an hour drive north of Pittsburgh). Being new to the SCA, it might be a bit of sensory overload, but you would be able to learn from the best instructors in the Known World. The other is begins this weekend in the Phoenix area called The Estrella Wars. Perhaps someone from out that way can put up the web page on it, if it exists. (I couldn't find one on the Atenveld Kingdom page). Meisterin Katarina Helene (KHvS) (PS.... just a comment, with this list, you have to hit "Reply All" and then delete off the individual's e-mail. If you don't do that, the person you are intending to reply to gets two copies of the reply -- one from the list and the other from you directly. If you intend to just reply to the individual without going back to the list, you just hit "Reply.") - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dave and Lani Kyea" To: "Helen Schultz" ; "Scribe's List" <> Sent: Thursday, February 15, 2001 1:38 AM Subject: Re: [scribes]: Hello! Should you need some assistance, please ask away... you will get a good healthy variety of answers. And, we just LOVE new and enthusiastic scribes!!
